É importante lembrar a ordem do sistema métrico – decimal (quilômetro-hequitômetro-decâmetro-metro-decímetro-centimétro-milímetro).

Por exemplo, na escala numérica 1: 100.000 (que se lê: um para cem mil), o que esta razão significa:

a. Que uma unidade de medida no mapa corresponde a 100.000 vezes esta mesma unidade de medida no mundo real. Como a unidade de medida de referência no brasil e em outros países é o centímetro, posso então dizer que nesta escala: 1 cm no mapa = 100.000 cm no mundo real;

b. Esta escala expressa, me indica que o espaço representado no mapa foi reduzido 100 mil vezes;

c. Como 1cm no mapa corresponde a 100.000 cm, posso constatar também, que este mesmo 1cm = 1.000 metros no mundo real (são duas casas de centímetro para metro);

d. Posso constatar, ainda, que este mesmo 1cm, corresponde a 1km no mundo real. Isto porque, de metros para quilômetros são três casas de diferença;

e. Finalmente, ao chegar nesta compreensão numérica de que 1cm no mapa = 1 km no mundo real, é possível construir a escala gráfica da escala numérica 1:100.000, ou seja, uma régua subdividida em intervalos iguais de 1cm, na qual vai ser associado 1km.

Com isso 1cm=1km, 2cm=2km, 3 cm= 3km e assim sucessivamente. Esta explicação e o seu entendimento serão importantes para a resolução dos exercícios 1 e 2.
